Families form deep bonds that can never be substituted with something else. A grandparent watching his or her grandchildren or great grandchildren play while surrounded by other family members is a unique and wonderful thing. This family connection is one of the reasons why in-home care is such a popular type of senior care; it keeps seniors in their homes and allows them to be with their family more often. All during that time, they are still receiving the care and assistance that they need to stay healthy and safe throughout the course of the day.
In other places in this blog, I’ve talked about the concept that being in a familiar place with familiar people has a large benefit on the mental health of elderly folk, especially with those that are dealing with some sort of dementia. One of the great joys of in-home care is that it can also act as a way to provide memory care.
Senior care services are beginning to recognize the importance of different generations interacting with one another. For example, some assisted living facilities are hiring artists-in residence. The purpose of this is to bring younger people into their facilities to entertain and interact with the residents. Musicians, artists, actors, and others are finding that their jobs in nursing homes and assisted living homes is far more than just entertaining, though. They are also providing companionship to seniors. It makes the lives of the residents’ that much better, but it also provides benefits to the younger people that are discovering a new purpose in life–helping the elderly live a more enjoyable life.
An elderly loved one is not a burden, although sometimes that thought might cross your mind. It might even make you feel guilty, but there’s no reason to worry here. Having someone to care for is not easy and it can be extremely frustrating at times, but it is often a joy to give back to the people that gave so much of themselves to us when we were young. That’s part of what love is, after all. This doesn’t make it easy or less stressful, though. Having a professional caregiver to help carry some of that burden can ease the stress and help us feel that joy once again. Families are truly a blessing, and having someone to help out with those activities of daily living can remind us of this.
