If you have been involved in the senior care business or have observed in for any length of time, you have probably noticed that there are several issues that seem to keep occurring as problems for individuals and family time and time again. And although these issues may be recurrent, it does not mean that they are easy to solve on a widespread basis.
Some issues in the world of senior care are prevalent. This includes a lack of space in some hospitals and nursing homes, neglect when it comes to medical care, under-utilization of preventative care, a shortage of senior care employees, and a few other issues. These topics have been areas of concern for years, but as the senior population grows, the urgency of the problems is becoming much more severe. Some communities have found that they need to address issues immediately because of their unique circumstances, while others are still planning to find the most effective ways of dealing with issues if they ever do manifest into a crisis.
But what can we do to help our own families right now?
You cannot do much as one person to help solve the recurring elder care issues that the United States is currently facing. However, what you can do is to help the elderly individuals in your own family to have a higher quality of life. Each individual is different, and the needs of your parent are likely very different than the needs of someone else’s mom or dad. Focusing on what your family needs and what will work best for them is going to be the best way that you can handle the growing need for senior care in our country. For example, if your mom struggles to get around the house because she is recovering from surgery on her hip, hiring an in-home caregiver to assist her during her recovery helps her to maintain her freedom but still acknowledges and solves the temporary issues that she is facing during recovery.
Everyone has different needs. In-home care or respite care can go a long way toward helping some, but not everyone. Take some time to look at the specific set of needs that your family members have, and then meet with an elder care specialist to see what the best way to address their unique situation is. This case by case evaluation method enacted on a small scale can have big scale results when done right.
Widespread issues are a reality within our world. That goes for senior care, and beyond. However, by focusing on the individuals in your life, you can make a world of difference. You might not be able to do much about the lack of availability in high quality nursing homes, or the caregiver shortage that some communities are already facing. But you can ensure that your mom or dad is being well cared for and receiving the attention and medical care that they need to have the highest quality of life that they can have.
